Welcome to Lightning S Ranch!
Here at the ranch, we have been a livestock operation since 1980. We have raised cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, goats, chickens, guineas, turkeys, peacocks, camels, donkeys, emus and exotic cattle. This property is also the home of home of The Concrete Works/Sweeney Mining Co LLC. Having farmed for over 30 years gives us a unique experience and background for designing, using and incorporating our agricultural products. We use our ow feeders and waterers on our farm, and that's why we can be confident that the challenges and needs of your farm can be met using our products!
For over 30 years our 160 acre farm, orchard and gardens have been chemical free. In addition, all our animals are treated with the lowest stress possible. We believe the calmer, cleaner method of agriculture raises superior meat and produce. None of our animals are treated with any growth hormone, and we try to avoid all antibiotics. Our animals are relatively disease and pest free, and compliant in nature, after many years of selective breeding. Our farm plan is one of simplicity, green methods, and low stress livestock environments.
The farm runs a growing commercial flock of over , currently over 125, of Khatadin ewes. We use lifestock guardian animals, specifically donkeys to protect the sheep and also have a sheep working dog, Cinch. Our daughters ride horses, and of course what farm would be complete without a flock of chickens? We have both egg and meat varieties. We also have a flock of guineas to help with the ticks. We removed cattle in the beginning of the drought in 2011, and are currently considering which breed to bring back on our farm.
About 1/3 of our farm is set up for managed intensive grazing, and can easily be switched also to managed over grazing. Our pastures have clover, orchard grass, fescue, Bermuda and lespedeza. We only fertilize with our manure. In years of exceptional growth, we have the pastures cut for hay bales, mostly to be used during lambing when the ewes are locked up for predation control. Our feeding program involves almost no hay: except in the lambing stalls. During the droughts, we were able to successfully graze our animals in the wooded areas. We do give a certified organic, non GMO grain ration during times of feeding stress: i.e. severe drought, heavy lactation, or severe winter weather. When we offer grain, we use fence line feeders, J feeders and field bunks according to the size of livestock and the ration offered. We utilize our frost free water tanks in all our pastures, as well as line feeders on the borders for supplement feed. The remaining 2/3rds of the farm is on the wait list for an EQUIP program. It is basically dry pasture that we utilize when the creek and free standing seasonal ponds have water in them. We use our field bunk feeders there to move the livestock and to encourage them to remain on that part of the farm.
